ISLAMABAD: Pakistani authorities have arrested 11 suspects linked to the brutal honor killing of a young couple in Balochistan, after a graphic video of the incident went viral on social media, triggering public outrage and nationwide condemnation.

The disturbing video clip, widely shared last week, shows a man and woman being shot by armed men for marrying against their families’ wishes. The incident reportedly took place around Eid Al-Adha and was ordered by a local jirga, a traditional tribal council.

Reacting swiftly, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti confirmed on Monday that 11 arrests had been made so far, with an ongoing operation to capture others involved.

“All those involved will be brought to justice. The state stands with the oppressed,” Bugti said on X (formerly Twitter).

Government spokesperson Shahid Rind revealed at a press conference that the families of the victims had not reported the incident, prompting the state to file a case on behalf of the victims. The suspects were identified through data analysis and the viral video clip.

Honor killings remain a grave issue in parts of Pakistan, where traditional customs often override legal protections, particularly when individuals marry by personal choice.

The incident drew strong condemnation from the Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC), which denounced the act as both “un-Islamic and terrorism.”

“Cases under terrorism charges must be filed against all involved,” the PUC urged, calling on Balochistan authorities to ensure swift justice.

This horrific episode has once again highlighted the urgent need to end tribal justice practices and enforce state law to protect the fundamental rights of all citizens especially women.
