Jeddah Mental Health Center Unveils “Raseen” Robot to Facilitate Addiction Recovery

JEDDAH: Jeddah’s Eradah Mental Health Complex recently inaugurated “Raseen,” a humanoid robot aimed at facilitating patients in addiction recovery as well as spreading awareness regarding substance abuse. The project is a part of Saudi Arabia’s continued digital health revolution.

Nominated for the name of the Arabic term for sobriety, Raseen represents balance and drug and alcohol abstinence. Unlike traditional service robots, Raseen is a state-of-the-art digital assistant driven by artificial intelligence, able to listen, analyze, and respond with scientifically correct information.

Wearing Saudi traditional clothing, Raseen provides psychological counseling, awareness rallies, and patient education. He also attends international conferences, visits schools, and community activities to support early detection, intervention methods, and prevention of relapse.

Dr. Khalid Al-Oufi, supervisor general of Eradah and a consultant psychiatrist, added: “Raseen gives direct and precise answers to questions relating to mental health and addiction, provides details about treatment, and assists patients in outpatient and inpatient capacities.”

Aside from patient treatment, the robot also aids staff training by teaching employees company policies, Vision 2030 strategies, and health sector transformation plans.

Experts in the National Centre for Mental Health Promotion emphasized the ethical aspects of applying AI in the healthcare sector. As AI improves access to care and treatment outcomes, they warned against the overdependence on it, noting the necessity of maintaining the human touch between caregivers and patients.

Concerns regarding data privacy, bias in algorithms, and ethical measures continue to form the core of the issue. Yet, it is observed that the function of AI in mental health is spreading very quickly, with AI-based solutions set to quintuple by 2035.

The announcement of Raseen is a key milestone toward bringing innovative technologies into Saudi Arabia’s healthcare sector, aligning with Vision 2030 as well as the country’s ongoing efforts to drive digital health solutions.
