RIYADH — Saudi Arabia has started the first pilot phase of autonomous cars in Riyadh, a major milestone in the development of smart, AI-based transportation systems.

Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of the Transport General Authority, Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser, launched the program on Wednesday, citing its importance in facilitating advanced technologies and realizing a secure, intelligent transportation system.

The project will be carried out in actual locations throughout seven major areas in Riyadh, such as Terminals 2 and 5 of King Khalid International Airport, Roshn Business Front, Princess Nourah University, the North Train Station, and the headquarters of the Transport General Authority. 13 pickup and drop-off stations have been allocated.

Created through a cross-industry collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, SDAIA, the Geospatial Authority, and private companies such as AiDriver, WeRide, and Uber, the initiative captures Saudi Arabia’s ambition to localize innovation and drive public-private partnership.

The vehicles will be closely monitored by onboard safety officers during the 12-month pilot period.

They will run on main highways and city roads under direct regulatory and technical supervision from the Authority.

Al-Jasser declared the move a demonstration of the Kingdom’s dedication to sustainable transport and economic development, labelling it “a model for smart and secure transport partnerships.”

The Authority confirmed the pilot is intended to pave the way for wider national implementation, making Saudi Arabia a leader in the region for autonomous mobility.
