Saudi Border Guards Nab 1,708 Smugglers, Make Enormous Drug Haul
RIYADH — Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Border Guards successfully foiled a number of attempts to smuggle an enormous quantity of drugs into the Kingdom, arresting 1,708 persons involved in the operations.
Among those arrested were 995 Ethiopian border violators, 695 Yemenis, 3 people from Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan, and 15 Saudi nationals, reports state.
The seizures were huge, which included:
350,644 amphetamine tablets
1,526,629 tablets that are under medical control
2.6 tons of hashish
144 tons of khat
The arrests were made in the border areas of Tabuk, Jazan, Asir, and Najran as part of the Ministry of Interior’s campaign against drugs to protect the Kingdom and its youth from drug trafficking.
The ministry also called on citizens and residents to report any suspicious activities related to drug smuggling or trafficking. Reports can be submitted via the toll-free numbers 911 (Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh, Eastern Province), 994 and 999 (other provinces), or via the General Directorate of Narcotics Control hotline at 995 and email: 995@gdnc.gov.sa.
The authorities assured that all reports are treated with utmost confidentiality to ensure the safety and anonymity of those reporting information.
