Saudi Deputy FM Calls for Increased Global Support for Somalia during OIC Meeting in Doha
RIYADH – Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed Elkhereiji called for the international community to increase its support for Somalia’s security, development, and stability while attending the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group meeting on Somalia in Doha, Qatar, on Monday.
Addressing the summit, Elkhereiji highlighted the necessity of supporting Somalia’s national priorities with infrastructure projects and sustainable production schemes, especially in view of the nation’s newly discovered natural resources.
He confirmed that the Kingdom continues to support Somalia through humanitarian and relief activities headed by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief). These activities, he added, reflect Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting long-term stability and lessening human suffering in the Horn of Africa.
Elkhereiji also revealed that Saudi Arabia supports the Somalia-Ethiopia reconciliation dialogue currently held in Turkiye, deeming it a crucial step toward lasting peace between the two nations. He said the agreement reflected both countries’ desire to solve tensions and build a security-filled future of regional cooperation and mutual development.
Denouncing persistent violence targeting the destabilization of Somalia, Elkhereiji appealed for collective action against extremism, which he stated continues to threaten national unity, harmonious living, and sustainable development.
In a closing remark, the deputy foreign minister congratulated Somalia for attaining a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2025–2026 term period and referred to it as a great diplomatic triumph that signifies increasing global faith in Somalia’s contribution to international peace and security.
