Saudi Play ‘The Hoop’ Premieres at Edinburgh Festival, Showcasing Cultural Diversity on Global Stage

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia made a notable mark at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with the premiere of its symbolic stage production “The Hoop,” directed by Fahad Al-Dosari. Hosted in the Scottish capital, the festival — renowned as one of the world’s largest theatrical events is this year spotlighting cultural diversity with more than 2,000 artists from 256 countries across 3,350 performances.

Supported by the Saudi Theater and Performing Arts Commission, The Hoop is part of the Kingdom’s Sitar program, a national initiative designed to empower local theater and nurture emerging Saudi talent. The play, running through August 5, is presented in English translation and delves into the repetitive monotony of modern life through symbolic drama, exploring deep existential themes.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Saudi Arabia’s participation underscores its growing investment in the cultural sector and its commitment to global artistic dialogue.

Previously, The Hoop earned acclaim at home, winning Best Contemporary Show at the second Riyadh Theater Festival in 2024. It also recently featured at the 79th Avignon Festival in France as part of an Arabic language celebration series further cementing its international appeal.
